I'm using Firefox on a wide screen and never encountered the problem described here.

But when using IE on screens with different sizes the captions are not readable. Other effects are that text is overlapping when resizing the browser window.

For me it smells as if these two problems have the same underlying cause.

Give me a hint about "nice mime type" - I'm always keen to learn something new.

The mimetype of your attached PNG was "image/x-png". I have never seen this mime-type before and don't see any difference to the normal "image/png" format. Streber uses mimetypes to distinguish files for downloading from images.
